Evaluation - Combination of Products

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

This video contains a voice-over for the presentation for the combination evaluation question

Presentation to go with the voice over:

Main points covered in the power point and video (Plan):

From audience research my primary target audience is: male, 18-24, C2DE,  left wing, North West, Yorkshire, Northern Scotland, London. They typically work in entertainment, advertising and marketing and also media and publishing.

secondary audience: the same demographic but female. They tend to have to same political views, are the same social grade and have similar interests and traits or personalities.

Uses and gratifications - why we consume media
Identify - can relate to the role model/actor
Educate - educates the audience
Entertain - entertain the audience
Social Interaction - can talk about the song/video with friends
Escapism - escape the aspects of real life as it is boring

My video applies to identification, entertain, social interaction and escapism

Identification - the viewer can identify with the role model/lead singer/actor
Entertain - the video entertains the viewer
Social Interaction - viewer can talk to friends about the song and music video
Escapism - the viewer can escape from real life whilst watching the video

Maslow
Psychological needs - love and belonging: relates to the social interaction from uses and gratifications therefore my video helps meet this need from the theory

Representation:
Dyer's star image - the main star has two roles - he is not like that in his personal real life, therefore their image was created for the song and the products

Combination:
Link between the three products - there are many links between all three products. The ancillary texts use the same colours, fonts, images as each other therefore they relate to each other. There are lots of relations to the video from the digipak. The ventriloquist and the lead singers relation on the front cover, the ventriloquist with VHS overlay and old TV effect. The propaganda and war footage. The colours and font also relate to the feel of the video.

Synergy - my products use synergy to help promote each other. the fonts colours and images relate to each other, therefore promoting each other. The magazine advert promotes the album, which links to the music video.

Symbiosis - not in my products as they are all the same company. they help each other not promote a separate companies products

Convergence - all of my media texts can be previewed on a single device such as a computer or phone. the video can be watched, the magazine ad can be seen and the album can be played. All can be done on a singular device, therefore there is convergence between the products.

Distribution - due to the internet and the decrease in magazine and albums, the distribution of my products are mainly online.

Platforms - film (music video), music (song), artwork (digipak, magazine ad), social media (twitter) Lots of media platforms are used within my media products. Therefore the convergence and synergy between them is helping to promote the other products on different platforms.

Evaluation - Media Technologies

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Main points covered in the video:

Premier Pro - Used to edit the footage together, create rough cuts and other cuts of the video. Used to add effects to the video, black and white, etc.

After Effects - Used for the more advanced effects, footage on the TV

Photoshop - Used to edit the photos for the graphic products, make the products, add effects, merge the images, filters, etc.

Illustrator - Used to combine the images together for the final digipak for the correct measurements.

Media Encoder - Used to export the cuts into a YouTube format, renders from after effects into a high quality format for premier pro.

Bridge - Used to rate images from the shoot, so I could review all of the images and choose the best one from the all.

Google forms - Used to create surveys for research and planing and also feedback from my video and graphics products.

Blogger - Used to document all of my production logs, planning and research. The whole aspect of research planning, production, evaluation and feedback is all shown on the blog.

Twitter - was used to keep my audience up to date. With images from shoots, screenshots of edits, and posts about final cuts.

YouTube - used to research previous music videos but also to upload cuts and renders for feedback and so I could post them on my blog. Also used for tutorials for the music video effects and the Photoshop effects. some footage was taken from YouTube too.

Google - I used google alot to research previous graphic product designs, such as magazines and digipaks. But also to research how to create certain effects for the video. I also used this to aid my progress of the graphic products.

Camera - To shoot all of the footage, and take images of the ventriloquist doll and the lead singer for the graphic productions.

Laptop - Used to create all of the productions and document all of the stages of production. All of the research and planning was done on my laptop, the edits of the music video and the graphic products, and the production log was documented on my laptop.

Did you make good use of these technologies?
Considering the quality of the final products and the time it took to complete them, I think that I did make good use of the technologies.

Were there any you could have exploited better?
Due to my in experience in some areas of Photoshop, it took a few tries to make the images look good with advanced effects and filters, to match the feel of the video. In the end I believe that i did exploit all of the technologies to their full potential from looking at the quality of the products and the feedback that I received from them the target audiences.

Did any produce unexpected results?
I had to re-shoot some footage due to the quality being at its full potential, therefore I had some footage that did not even make the final cut of the video. Therefore unexpected results were there but rectified by re-doing shoots and other work.

Multiple tries of cuts, effects and filters for the video and the graphic products, meant that unexpected results happened. Therefore I then re-rendered, shuffled the footage around and added different effects and filters to apply to conventions for the video

How much did the technology enhance your work?
Without the technologies, the quality of work would not be there and most likely non-existent, without a camera, a laptop and the software to edit the video and graphic products, the products would not be to the standard that they are or even not there.

Did your technical ability limited you or did it grow?
My technical ability was quite strong from the start as I had used the cameras, and software before the production. Therefore I could use my skills to create a good looking video, digipak and magazine advert. Some sections of the print side of the production, had me delayed due to my inexperience, but I would not say it limited my final product it just took longer to get there.

Evaluation - Forms and Conventions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Main points covered in the video:

My music video uses lots of signifiers, genre conventions and narrative to develop and challenge forms and conventions to suit its audience.

Goodwin
  • Genre characteristics - rock genre
    • Instruments
    • Band playing
    • colours - black and white
    • mise-en-scene
    • props - doll, old TV
    • locations
  • demands of the record label
    • focus on the lead singer
  • relationship between the visuals and lyrics
    • narrative - tells us what is going on and the meaning behind the song
  • relationship between the visuals and music
    • the editing style is synced with the beat of the music
    • the editing pace is synced with the music - speeds up at the chorus
    • the pause in the song is synced with the visuals
    • the performance shots are shown at the chorus
    • the buildup of the song shows the narrative
  • voyeurism - not included not appropriate for the style and genre of video
  • iconography - not necessary
  • intertextuality - not necessary
Neale
Genre = repetition + difference
‘Difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre’

My video uses lots of repetition - genre conventions so the audiences can decode the meanings from the text, and so they get the correct message from the text.

My video uses differences to create a new idea for the genre of the song, this is so audiences can still be entertained by the media text, and so it is not the same as the other texts.

Magazine & Digipak

The magazine + digipak uses specific fonts and colours conventions of rock so the audience can relate to the text, and realise the genre of music.

they use the ventriloquist and lead singer to show the focus on the main artist, which is conventional for rock. The puppet also relates to the narrative in the video

the costume of the lead singer relates to the genre and style of music

Use, develop or challenge?
  • My video takes some of the common genre elements but uses them in different combinations and adds new ideas.
    • this is due to the typical rock genre conventions such as:
      • main focus on lead singer
      • band shots
      • black and white
      • narrative - ventriloquist
      • locations
      • mise-en-scene
      • camera work - movement
      • props
      • colours
      • effects - grainy images, old tv static, VHS player overlay
      • my video also challenges the conventions so the video is different from others such as:
    • unique narrative
    • TV's
    • ventriloquist
    • overlaying effect
    • visual effects
    • propaganda, war footage
Forms
  • hybrid - narrative, performance and concept video
    • lots of performance of the band and singer - conventional of rock videos
    • concept of the TV, ventriloquist doll
    • narrative of the doll, church and lead singer
  • Audience research
    • performance of the band, therefore I made sure that lots of performance was included in the final video
    • focus on the lead singer
    • lots of interesting concepts in rock videos
    • my video is not heavily focused on the narrative due to it not being conventional - not many rock videos have a strong narrative - usually concept or performance or a combination of the two
Conventions
  • Cinematography
    • camera movement
      • shaky - performance
      • stable - narrative
    • camera angles
      • look up and down at icons to show their power
    • shot types
      • close-ups to show emotion
      • long shots to signify the distance of the narrative
  • Editing
    • editing style
      • fast pace editing to match the music
      • black and white to fit the mood and themes of the song
      • colours
      • grain
      • static
      • overlay
      • opacity
      • brightness & contrast
      • blending options & filters
    • visual effects
      • the VHS overlay helps to emphasise the age of the music
      • footage on the TVs
Real media products

Video
To come up with the music video idea, aspects from previously created music videos were used. New ideas were then formed from them to create a difference from the others. All of the best aspects from the videos were put into the video, such as the TV, ventriloquist doll, performance from the band, etc.

Magazine & Digipak
To come up with ideas for the magazine cover and digipak, I looked at previous existing adverts and album covers, I took ideas from the foo fighters album cover with the merge of the faces and implemented it with the lead singer and ventriloquist doll on my digipak. The colour scheme was taken from another existing digipak, therefore I took the best parts from the existing designs. To make my design unique, the layout of the faces were different, the fonts, and the TV lines effect were all my original ideas. The TV lines effect and colour scheme help to relate to the video, so they all link. The magazine uses the same main image from the album cover. This is quite a common convention for rock adverts. I used similar layouts and text to other existing adverts, therefore the audiences can understand what is going on.

The inside of the digipak relates to the video, the two images relate to two key scenes in the video, therefore giving it purpose. The VHS overlay on the ventriloquist image helps to relate to the character but also the theme and feel of the video. The war image relates to the scenes in the video of war footage. This helps to keep the link between the products.
