Evaluation - Forms and Conventions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Main points covered in the video:

My music video uses lots of signifiers, genre conventions and narrative to develop and challenge forms and conventions to suit its audience.

Goodwin
  • Genre characteristics - rock genre
    • Instruments
    • Band playing
    • colours - black and white
    • mise-en-scene
    • props - doll, old TV
    • locations
  • demands of the record label
    • focus on the lead singer
  • relationship between the visuals and lyrics
    • narrative - tells us what is going on and the meaning behind the song
  • relationship between the visuals and music
    • the editing style is synced with the beat of the music
    • the editing pace is synced with the music - speeds up at the chorus
    • the pause in the song is synced with the visuals
    • the performance shots are shown at the chorus
    • the buildup of the song shows the narrative
  • voyeurism - not included not appropriate for the style and genre of video
  • iconography - not necessary
  • intertextuality - not necessary
Neale
Genre = repetition + difference
‘Difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre’

My video uses lots of repetition - genre conventions so the audiences can decode the meanings from the text, and so they get the correct message from the text.

My video uses differences to create a new idea for the genre of the song, this is so audiences can still be entertained by the media text, and so it is not the same as the other texts.

Magazine & Digipak

The magazine + digipak uses specific fonts and colours conventions of rock so the audience can relate to the text, and realise the genre of music.

they use the ventriloquist and lead singer to show the focus on the main artist, which is conventional for rock. The puppet also relates to the narrative in the video

the costume of the lead singer relates to the genre and style of music

Use, develop or challenge?
  • My video takes some of the common genre elements but uses them in different combinations and adds new ideas.
    • this is due to the typical rock genre conventions such as:
      • main focus on lead singer
      • band shots
      • black and white
      • narrative - ventriloquist
      • locations
      • mise-en-scene
      • camera work - movement
      • props
      • colours
      • effects - grainy images, old tv static, VHS player overlay
      • my video also challenges the conventions so the video is different from others such as:
    • unique narrative
    • TV's
    • ventriloquist
    • overlaying effect
    • visual effects
    • propaganda, war footage
Forms
  • hybrid - narrative, performance and concept video
    • lots of performance of the band and singer - conventional of rock videos
    • concept of the TV, ventriloquist doll
    • narrative of the doll, church and lead singer
  • Audience research
    • performance of the band, therefore I made sure that lots of performance was included in the final video
    • focus on the lead singer
    • lots of interesting concepts in rock videos
    • my video is not heavily focused on the narrative due to it not being conventional - not many rock videos have a strong narrative - usually concept or performance or a combination of the two
Conventions
  • Cinematography
    • camera movement
      • shaky - performance
      • stable - narrative
    • camera angles
      • look up and down at icons to show their power
    • shot types
      • close-ups to show emotion
      • long shots to signify the distance of the narrative
  • Editing
    • editing style
      • fast pace editing to match the music
      • black and white to fit the mood and themes of the song
      • colours
      • grain
      • static
      • overlay
      • opacity
      • brightness & contrast
      • blending options & filters
    • visual effects
      • the VHS overlay helps to emphasise the age of the music
      • footage on the TVs

Video
To come up with the music video idea, aspects from previously created music videos were used. New ideas were then formed from them to create a difference from the others. All of the best aspects from the videos were put into the video, such as the TV, ventriloquist doll, performance from the band, etc.

Magazine & Digipak
To come up with ideas for the magazine cover and digipak, I looked at previous existing adverts and album covers, I took ideas from the foo fighters album cover with the merge of the faces and implemented it with the lead singer and ventriloquist doll on my digipak. The colour scheme was taken from another existing digipak, therefore I took the best parts from the existing designs. To make my design unique, the layout of the faces were different, the fonts, and the TV lines effect were all my original ideas. The TV lines effect and colour scheme help to relate to the video, so they all link. The magazine uses the same main image from the album cover. This is quite a common convention for rock adverts. I used similar layouts and text to other existing adverts, therefore the audiences can understand what is going on.

The inside of the digipak relates to the video, the two images relate to two key scenes in the video, therefore giving it purpose. The VHS overlay on the ventriloquist image helps to relate to the character but also the theme and feel of the video. The war image relates to the scenes in the video of war footage. This helps to keep the link between the products.
