As preparation for our A2 media project we re-created a music video of Where Are U Now by Justin Bieber. We re-created the video by filming and matching each individual shot to the video. We shot the clips in 4K so we could zoom into the clips without too much lost resolution. All of our clips were shot on the green screen meaning lighting was very important. Some of the shots were not useable, or affected by shadow due to the lighting therefore we had to mask this out. We had to miss out some of the shots in the video, as they would not be possible to recreate in the time we had allocated for the video. After shooting, we then split the video into distinct chunks and edited them separately. For my part of the editing, I had to edit together the main dance scene when all the drawings appear. Before applying all the drawings, I edited all the footage together, so it could be printed and drawn over.
Due to some of the shots not being that well lit, I had to mask the shot and invert the mask so parts of the footage would not be seen. As the subject moves quite a lot, due to him dancing, I had the key frame the positioning of the mask, animating the movement as certain parts of shadow showed up and as he moved into the mask over the shadow. As some of the shots had dancing pixels and bits of green around the edge of the subject, I had to increase the chroma rolloff removing the dancing pixels.
After masking all the footage, to recreate this blurry duplication effect, I had to green screen the subject, duplicate the footage and offset each individual clip by a few frames to make this shadow effect, I added a gaussian blur to the clips behind the first clip to smooth out shadows, which made the whole thing look better.Throughout the edit, I added a colour correction and altered the brightness and contrast of the subject. For the ending clips of my part of the edit, the shot fades to black. I added a black background which was key framed to increase in opacity, but I placed this underneath the green screened person, as in the video the background fades to black quicker than the subject. I then added another black solid on top of all the footage, and key framed the opacity.
Each individual shot would be printed and then scanned, after the drawings had been done. In total 1080 frames would need to be printed and drawn on. We added a frame counter in premiere pro so we could keep track of all the frames and the order that they would need to be played in. They would then be printed, drawn on and then scanned back in to the computer. They would then be played back in order and added to the music video. The whole evening of drawing on the frames is going to be time lapsed and then also added to the music video.
Overall, I think that the music video turn out really well. The drawings, footage and time lapsing workout really well making the whole video come together. The time lapsing of the drawing process was really effective and made the video look a lot better. The only issue i had with the whole video is the quality of the drawings flicking through. If we have had more frames and drawings the video would have run a lot smoother making the video look a lot better. Besides the frames rate the video looked really good and almost matched the original version.
This is a good description of the process Elden but it would be better to see the final video embedded and reviewed. How do you think it turned out and what could have been better?
